Bone Grafting
Bone grafting is a procedure of building up the bone in the area where a dental implant has been made for supporting the implant. Dental bone grafting is a very common procedure in dentistry which is used in the case of dental implants and in periodontal procedures. There are several methods of bone grafting which are usually necessary when there is not enough bone available to place implants.![]()
The dental problem of supporting the implant is treated by bone grafting for which a source of bone to place in the site is required. The bone that are used are of three types which can be taken from the patient’s mouth areas or from the site were dentist drills into the bone to prepare space for dental implants. Other common sites for taking the bone are hip and cadavers. The bone taken from cadavers is very safe and useful ones. A third type of bone is a synthetic type of bone used for bone grafting.
Procedure for Bone Grafting :
There are various procedures for bone grafting which are as follows :
- Sinus Lift Procedure : this procedure includes a surgery above the maxillary posterior teeth in which the maxillary sinus membrane is elevated and there a bone graft is harvested from another site in the mouth over the sinus floor. This procedure increases the amount of bone available for implants in a vertical direction and hence allowing the implants to be placed in the back part of the upper jaw.
- Ridge-augmentation : in certain cases the alveolar ridge is reabsorbed and a bone graft is necessary to increase the ridge height or width to place the implant. In this process an autogenous bone is then grafted to the desired location inside the mouth.
- Nerve-repositioning : the inferior alveolar nerve in the lower jaw restricts the quantity of bone available to place implants in the back of jawbone. This procedure of nerve repositioning involves repositioning of this large sensory nerve in order to make room for placement of dental implants.
- Immediate Extraction Socket Graft : at times an implant in the mouth is considered as the replacement of choice for an extracted tooth. However it may be advantageous to fill the missing tooth socket with an artificial bone to prepare the extraction site for placing the implant.
