Dental Braces

Dental braces are also known as Orthodontic braces which are a device used for correcting alignment of teeth and their position. Orthodontic braces are often used to correct malocclusions such as under bites, cross bites and open bites, or crooked teeth and various other flaws of teeth and jaws. Dental braces are also used along with other appliances to widen the palate or jaws, for creating spaces between teeth or else shaping the teeth and jaws.

Procedure of Applying Dental Braces : The procedure of applying dental braces first includes determining the fact whether or not the braces are suitable for patient’s dental treatment. Once the braces are chosen appointment is set up for making X-rays, moulds and impressions. These test records are then analyzed for determining the dental problems. Depending upon the complexities and types of problem the time of treatment may vary from six months to six years.

Teeth which are to be braced have an etchant applied to them to help the cement bond to the surface of the tooth. A bracket then is applied with dental cement which thereafter is cured with light until it hardens. In certain cases orthodontic spacers are inserted between the molars for creating room for molar bands which are required to ensure brackets will stick. An archwire is then threaded between the brackets and are affixed with elastic ligatures.

Types of Dental Braces : There are various types of dental braces which are offered by the orthodontists according to the requirements of the patient:

  • Traditional Braces : The traditional braces are made of stainless steel, and are often combined with nickel titanium and are the most widely used.
  • Ceramic Braces : These braces are a blend in more with the natural color of the tooth and are more visually appealing. Ceramic brackets are more brittle than stainless steel brackets therefore are somewhat thicker to resist breakage.
  • Gold Plated Stainless Steel Braces : These are opted by those who are allergic to nickel also by some people who simply prefer the look of gold.
  • Lingual Braces : These are fitted behind the teeth and are not visible with causal interaction however they are difficult to adjust to as they can hinder tongue movement.
