Impacted Teeth

The term impacted teeth refers to the teeth that gets stuck beneath the gums. In such condition tooth are unable to emerge properly. This teeth problem usually causes due to overcrowding of teeth which results into insufficient place for a new tooth. Impaction generally occurs in the case when a baby tooth is lost before the emergence of a new tooth. This condition allows the remaining teeth to drift into the free space which was for the new tooth.

Causes : Most of the teeth that get impacted are the wisdom teeth as they are the last permanent teeth and thus jaw line lacks enough space for them. This dental problem can also lead to Gingivitis that develops in the gums surrounding an impacted tooth. In this condition the disease is called pericoronitis. This flap of gum over the impacted teeth can trap fluids, food and bacteria which may lead to developing and spreading of throat or cheek infections.

Treatment : Dental treatment of this problem involves the removal of the impacted teeth. The process of removal of the teeth can be done with the use of local anesthesia or with sedation to calm the person. While in some complicated cases a surgery is performed with the use of a general anesthesia.
